How to Renew an Expired CNA Certificate

By Lanee’ Blunt

A certified nursing assistant’s certificate is valid for only two years. You are required to work in nursing-related services and earn monetary compensation within the last 2 years in order to renew your certificate so that your name will stay on the registry. If a CNA has not met the requirements or has let their licenses expire they must reapply for a license. However, the requirements for renewal vary by state.

Expiration Date

If you are renewing your license after the expiration date you may have to pay a delinquency fee. This will be an additional fee to your renewal fee. Look at the expiration date on your license and the last date of employment because you had to have worked within 24 months to use the Nurse’s Aide Registry Renewal form. If you have not worked within the last 24 month you can still renew your certificate, but you must reapply for a license and meet all the current requirements.

The Renewal Form

Complete the form. The first section is personal information. Your employer must fill out the second section. It doesn't have to be your current employer as long as it is an employer within the 24 month period.

The Fee

Check the renewal requirement because this will ensure that you pay the right amount. If you are renewing before the license expires your fee amount will be $65.00. If you are renewing after your license is expired the fee will be $115.00. The fees may vary by state. You will need to send in the fee to the State Board.

Mail and Process Time

Sign and date the form. Mail it according to your particular state’s address. The form will be processed and it may take up to two weeks. In some states you can apply online, and you can check the status of your renewal application online also.

Some states require that you take the state examination again if you have not worked in a nursing facility for more than 2 years.
